BONDHU intends to undertake a mangrove afforestation project of 5000 ha area as a pilot project in cooperation with the Forest Department under the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change. The source of financing will be carbon-offsets revenue from the voluntary / REDD+ market.
The projects will be designed and implemented in close cooperation with the Bangladesh Forest Department taking the long-term visions of the Bangladesh Government into consideration. The modalities of cooperation will be finalized after discussion. A timeline for the projects is proposed as follows:
The funds for the projects will be organized by BONDHU from carbon-offsets revenue from the voluntary / REDD+ market.
The methodology applied is the large-scale CDM A/R methodology AR-AM0014 Afforestation and reforestation of degraded mangrove habitats Version 03.0.
The species selected for the project should be suitable for the region. They should be non-invasive and native species. Species that have been used in similar projects include. Based on the experience of the Forest Department and afforestation locations, the species will be selected.
There can be a range of plant spacing and density based on the lands and the species selected. Similar projects have used the spacing of 1m x 2m or 1.1m x 3m, allowing for 5000 trees/ha or 3000 trees/ha. Tree density after establishment is expected to be 3000 trees/ha.
The estimated carbon sequestration is 525.4 tCo2/ha over years 1 to 7. This can vary slightly based on the species selected, soil, and survival rates. The estimated carbon offset will be as below:
Year | Estimated net GHG removals in t CO2-e | Cumulative in t CO2-e |
---|---|---|
1 | 27,365 | 27,365 |
2 | 25,928 | 53,293 |
